Dick DeVos Reveals the Family’s Philanthropic Contribution

In November 2016, President Elect Donald Trump nominated Betsy DeVos to the position of Secretary of Education. After the nomination, it was mandatory for Betsy and her husband to provide information on their philanthropic work.

Instead of sharing the information with the panel, the couple decided to share the information with the public. Their decision to reveal the information was criticized by most of the public officials. They commented that it was a tactic to have the people turn a blind eye to their political contributions.

In the report, the couple has contributed $139 million in their lifetime. The report also indicated that Dick and Betsy donated $11.5 million in 2015. Most of the couple’s contribution has been done in support of the education system.

Dick and Betsy DeVos charity giving was paved for them by their parents. The couple comes from wealthy families who have made significant contributions. The DeVos Family has contributed $1.2 billion in their lifetime.

Philanthropic work

The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, established in 1989 and through the organization, the couple has managed to support different causes. Some of the beneficiaries include Kids USA, West Michigan Academy, and Education Freedom Fund among others. Through the Foundation, Dick and his wife have been supporting the ArtPrize Competition.

The couple supports students from developing countries pursuing their business degrees.

Employment

Dick DeVos joined the family business Amway in 1974. He was in charge of different departments like finance, research, development, and marketing. After ten years, Dick was promoted to the Vice President of the Company. He was put in charge of the Company’s operations in 18 countries.

In 1991, Richard DeVos Sr. acquired Orlando Magic. Dick served as the president of the Company for a short period. He, however, left the Orlando Magic to assume his position as the President of the Amway. During his tenure at Amway, Dick was involved in the restructuring of the Company, and that was when Alticor was born.

Dick left the Alticor to join Windquest. By the time he was leaving Amway, Dick has managed to increase the revenue of the Company to $4.5 billion. Dick DeVos served as the President of Windquest Group. Windquest is an investment firm that deals with technology and manufacturing.

Political involvement

In 1990, Dick was elected to the Michigan State Board of Education. Dick, however, resigned from the position, two years into his Eight-year term. He resigned to join Amway as its President. Dick was appointed to the Grand Valley University Board Control in 1996.

In 2006, Dick participated in the Michigan Gubernatorial race. He lost the race, but he remains to be the richest man to ever participate in the race.

Dick DeVos: The Leader We Hope for and Dream to Be

There is no testing the waters when it comes to Dick DeVos’s endeavors; he dives right in. Growing up with daily involvement in his father’s business Amway, Dick was provided an opportunity that he has since shaped into a legacy. He began working in Amway in 1974, leaving it to develop The Windquest Group, an investment management company in his own neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan that supports technology, manufacturing, and clean energy. Although he returned to become the president of Amway, he retired from that position in 2002 to dedicate his time to Windquest and a myriad of political and philanthropic pursuits.

Some of those pursuits include Dick and his wife Betsy’s co-chairing of the Education Freedom Fund, which offers private scholarships to low-income families in Michigan; Dick acting as board member of RDV Corporation, Willow Creek Association, Spectrum Health System, Thunderbird School of Global Management, and more; and creating the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation for local and global growth. Amazingly, these are only a handful of DeVos’s many achievements, done in tandem to being an active participant with his wife in Windquest’s investment in numerous technology, manufacturing, clean-tech, and non-profit organizations. Many of these organizations directly support the local community of Grand Rapids, as can be seen on Windquest’s portfolio. Likewise, the DeVos Foundation is devoted to bringing leadership, transformation, and support to the West Michigan area. One example of this devotion is ArtPrize, founded by Dick and Betsy’s son Rick; it is a stunning exhibition of globally-submitted artwork where the public votes on the winner for a $200,000 prize. More info can be found on other recipients of the foundation on their website.

In personally viewing Dick’s social media pages I was struck by his warmth and visionary scope. The genuine care he has for the suffering, the success, and the wellbeing of not only his neighbors but the world is truly inspirational. Opportunity and wealth have not alienated Dick from the rest of the world, but rather augmented his compassion and support of their advancement. It is here, in Dick DeVos, that we find the type of leader we’ve always hoped for and the hero we quietly dream to be.

According to the magazine, DeVos, the co-founder of Amway and owner the Orlando Magic basketball team, along with the rest of his family gives about $94 million a year to charity. So far they have given away $1.2 billion in total to philanthropic causes. That makes them 20th in the world when it comes to charitable giving, according to Forbes. The bulk of their charitable donations has gone to education, health and community services, churches and faith-based organizations and arts and culture. The family says it is sharing this information to encourage others to give generously as well.

As soon as he became wealthy, Dick DeVos began giving money and material support to charitable causes throughout Michigan, especially in Grand Rapids where he grew up.
The DeVos family now has five family foundations through which they give to philanthropic causes and organizations. They are the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, the Cheri DeVos(CDVS) Foundation, the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Foundation, the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation and the Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation. They also offer advice and guidance to the organizations to which they give money.

Amway was founded in 1959 by Dick DeVos and Jay Van Andel his childhood friend. The direct sales behemoth now earns about ten billion dollars annually. Dick DeVos has an estimated net worth of $5.7 billion. That means he’s now Michigan’s second richest resident. About half of the donations the five DeVos foundations give goes to organizations located in West Michigan where the company began. Each of the foundations focuses their giving in specific areas. The Doug and Maria DeVos foundation, for example, give lots of money to the public schools in Grand Rapids.

A major goal of Dick DeVos and his family is to improve the quality of life for all the people throughout West Michigan. They want everyone to know they’re important and their lives matter. Donations from the DeVos family also helps provide food, clothing, shelter, showers, access to job training, jobs and a variety of social serves for the poorest residents of the region.
